There was a time when I thought my story was something I needed to survive. I didn’t yet understand that one day, the very story I was trying to survive might become the thing that helps someone else keep going.
My belief about what I had been through
For a long time, I believed that certain parts of my story made me less worthy. Rejection, heartbreak, disappointment, and fear have a way of convincing us that what happened to us is who we are. But there comes a moment when you have to decide whether your story will remain a place you hide or become a place where you finally find your voice..
Healing didn’t erase what happened. It changed the way I carried it. I began to understand that my experiences could teach me something without defining me. The places that once felt like evidence of what was wrong with me, slowly became evidence of what I had survived.
What Changed
The turning point wasn’t when everything around me changed. It was when I began to see myself differently. I stopped asking why my story had happened and started asking what I could do with what it had taught me.
That question changed everything. It gave me permission to stop being ashamed of what I had lived through and start looking for the wisdom inside it. Not because every experience was good, but because God could still use what I had survived for something greater than the pain itself. I began to realize that healing isn’t always about getting a different past. Sometimes it is about becoming a different person because of what you’ve carried.
When your Story Becomes Someone Else’s Hope
I eventually realized that my story wasn’t only about me. What I had walked through could become a language someone else understood. The words I once needed to hear might be the words someone else is searching for today.
That doesn’t mean I have every answer. It doesn’t mean the journey is finished. It simply means I no longer believe I have to wait until I am completely certain, or completely fearless before my life can have impact.
Now I understand that my story can survive me-and become hope for someone else.
If something I’ve lived, learned, questioned, or healed from helps another person pause, breathe, tell the truth, or take one more step towards who God created them to be, then the story carries a purpose beyond me.
What will You Do With Your Story?
Maybe your story is still fresh. Maybe you’re still learning how to carry it. Maybe you’re standing in the middle of a chapter you never expected to live. You don’t have to have the whole story figured out to begin asking what it can become.
Your story doesn’t have to be perfect to have purpose. What you’ve lived through does not have to be the end of your story. It can become wisdom. It can become compassion. It can become courage. It can become the beginning of something that reaches farther than you ever imagined.
So I’m sharing my thoughts- not because I have arrived, but because I know what it feels like to need a reason to keep becoming.
May you leave here more settled than when you arrived.
